New Zealand Wild Pig Hunting New Zealand Wild Boar (Pig) (sus scrofa)
Hunting Captain James Cook introduced European wild boar (pigs) into New Zealand in 1773, hence their name, "Captain Cookers". These pigs adapted very readily to the mild climate and quickly spread throughout the country dwelling in many of the native forests.
Physique
Wild boars come in a variety of colours and are hardy and strong animals weighing up to 136kg (300 lb). Their ivory tusks can be up to 75mm (3 inches) long. Wild pig (boar) hunting is a popular sport in New Zealand.
With their keen eyesight and sense of smell, the wild pig provides a real challenge to hunters.
They can be very dangerous, especially when cornered. The most productive method of hunting these animals is using specially trained dogs, as these pigs usually inhabit extremely dense bush and undergrowth. The hunter will spot the animal and stalk it, and at the opportune time either take a shot, or send in the dogs, which usually hold the animal until the hunter arrives.
Using a rifle can be very dangerous in this situation, so hunters use a long "pig" (bayonet-style) knife to make the kill. This, in itself, is somewhat risky, with the wild boar in a frenzy of movement as it tries to escape, it is quite unpredictable. It is not unknown for dogs to be injured by the ferocity of their movements. This is a highly-charged and exciting sport.
